BlackVinyl Decor Group Interior

  • Original Movie Data Plate

The 6A trim code on the original “559” Bullitt Mustang is shown here. That code indicates a “Black vinyl (interior decor)” package. In 1968, this would have cost $123.86 to add to the car. The Decor Group interior included: deluxe door panels, woodgrain dash panels, overhead console, woodgrain shift knob, chrome seatbelt buckles, and chrome buttons on the seats.

  • Seats

These black vinyl seats with chrome buttons were beautifully re-covered by JC Davis at Chopped Upholstery & Custom. JC worked hard to make these fit the old frames and did a masterful job recreating a factory look. Visit his site below for contact information.

  • Woodgrain Dash and Autograph

A woodgrain dash is part of the decor group interior, but the passenger side generally features a Mustang logo above the glove box. Since the outside is devoid of emblems, we opted to forego the emblems inside as well. Instead, an authenticated original Steve McQueen autograph is mounted in its place.

  • Deluxe Door Panels

The door panel insert is different, with a chrome-trimmed woodgrain strip. The deluxe door pulls are an addition as well, which moves the armrest (also specific to this door panel). The “speaker grill” has an additional light and room for a small speaker that was optional in 1968. We incorporated Infinity KAPPA 20MX 2” speakers that are hidden well by this factory option.

  • Woodgrain Shift Knob

While admittedly not a factory shift pattern, this is a replica of a woodgrain shift knob. This shift pattern is accurate for the T5 World Class Transmission installed on this car.

Recent pictures of the original “559” Bullitt Mustang shows a Hurst shift lever with a white ball knob. This was installed by the car’s second owner, so the movie Mustang would have had this configuration (with a 4-speed pattern) at the time of shooting.

  • Overhead Console

An overhead console rounds out the Decor Group interior. This features working map lights, and a woodgrain panel for 1968 (stainless steel was 1967) to match the other woodgrain components. This was installed over the factory original headliner.

  • Steering Wheel

The factory 1968 Mustang steering wheel was not a particularly exciting addition to the factory interior. Steve McQueen was gifted two steering wheels by Carrol Shelby from 1967 GT500s. We’ve taken some license here since this wheel is a reproduction, and the center cap is a custom addition as well.

Steve McQueen was accustomed to racing while wearing leather driving gloves, but a police detective wouldn’t wear those. Instead, he had the steering wheel leather-wrapped. (That’s on the short to-do list for this car, but the woodgrain actually matches the rest of the interior well in the meantime.)
